- Altered States
- Altered States is a hack written by Mark Johns and William MacKay; with additional code by Ben Spees.
- Many thanks to Andrew Welch, Paul Baxter, John Penn, and Matt Slot for providing their expertise
- while we debugged. (This hack was written entirely during the MacHack conference)
-
- About
- -----
- Altered states applies a real-time filter to almost every call which copies graphics
- to the screen, turning your mac experience into a freaky wacked-out trip from
- a twisted dreamland! It accomplishes this by patching StdBits() and re-routing
- all traffic to our own offscreen graphics world, applying a filter, and blitting it
- to its destination. To install and use, drag Altered States into your Extensions
- folder and reboot.
-
- Once you have restarted, fire up DrugTest. DrugTest allows you to test the filters
- in a 240x240 window. It will apply it to anything behind it, acting like a pair of
- reality-altering sunglasses. By clicking multiple times in the content of the
- window, it will apply the filter repeatedly. Once you have selected your desired
- "drugs" from the menubar, select "Apply to Altered States" to make the filter
- effect system-wide via some inter-application communication.
-
- Note: Caps lock acts as a toggle for the patch, if it is down, StdBits() is re-routed
- for altered states, otherwise your machine remains unchanged....
-
- It is also fun to drag icons around in the finder to watch them leave a trail of
- the filter effect...
